Wagan EL2405 100-Watt Smart AC USB Inverter with DC Socket Review

Wagan EL2405 100-Watt Smart AC USB Inverter with DC Socket

This is a very small DC > AC inverter than converts 12V DC from your car to 120V AC. The removable power cord is a good idea and it has a handy 5V USB plug on the side for charging small USB devices.
It's smaller than a deck of cards but they've overrated it's power capacity by quite a bit. It doesn't have enough cooling capacity to prevent overheating of it's internal parts with even a small load, so it gets hot and shuts off.
I measured it's output with a quality Fluke TrueRMS voltmeter and the output looks ok at 117V AC which is close to a standard 120V household outlet. This is adequate to run most low power AC devices with no issues.
The 120 Watt load rating is overstated because it heats up to 100`F even before you plug in anything. Then it gets really hot if you connect anything that draws some power such as a laptop computer. I tried a Dell D830 laptop which requires 25 watts to run. The AC Inverter overheated and shutdown within 2 minutes while running a laptop.
I have a variety of test equipment and found that the inverter can handle 15 watts all day but 20 watts is the thermal limit. 25 watts overloads it and it overheated to 190`F and shutdown in 2 minutes. It smelled like hot plastic burning. It's possible another inverter of the same model may perform better but that is not likely.
This design has marginal internal cooling capacity so it appears limited to about 20 watts max. The tiny 3/4" built-in fan is quiet at first and it gets louder as the inverter heats up. The fan has a high pitched whine and is really too small. The fan noise may be ok in a moving automobile as it would be drowned out by road noise.
If they changed the design to include a real aluminum heatsink with some mass to it that would increase the power handling a lot. A bigger 2" fan would have worked also.
There is no "off" button.
It has a power LED to indicate that it's on.
The overtemp shutdown feature works.
The fan is thermally regulated, and ends up running all the time.
The low battery feature works and it will shut off if the input voltage gets below 10.3V DC.
It automatically turns back on when the voltage comes back up to 12V.
Tiny high speeed fans typically don't have a long lifespan.
Technical data:
I measured a 400mA current draw with the unit idling with nothing plugged in. A 25 watt load draws 2 amps on the 12V line which sounds about right. Be aware that if you try to run something that actually draws 120 watts (using an inverter that could handle it) a load that big may blow the fuse in your vehicle 12V outlet since they typically has a 10-15 amps fuse.10 amps X 12V = 120 watts, for example.
Conclusion:
This is a really tiny voltage inverter. If you plan to only run small equipment like a AA battery charger, camera, or MP3 player that needs 5 to 10 watts then it should work ok for you.
I am going to return mine in favor of a physically larger inverter with some mass to keep it cool and one that can really handle 50 watts or more. A quality unit rated for 50 watts would be much better than a tiny, plastic, overrated 120 Watt one.

Three-Way Car Cigarette Lighter Socket Splitter w/ USB Port Review

Three-Way Car Cigarette Lighter Socket Splitter w/ USB Port
Average Reviews:

I had multiple problems with this.
First, one of the first things I tried to plug into one of the outlets went in too far, to the point where it wouldn't come out (the springy metal parts that compress when you insert something apparently went in so far that they released on the other side of the sleeve, making it impossible to retract), I ended up needing to break the thing to get it out. Subsequently, using the outlets that still worked, I've been afraid to push things in too far, and maybe that's why things often pop out a bit and I need to re-insert them.
Also, I intended to use the USB port to power some speakers, but it was useless for that because it put a horrible noise into the speakers.
So... it basically works... but you need to be sure not to over-insert things, be prepared for things to pop out on their own, and don't use the USB for an audio device.
UPDATE: Even if you push things good and solidly, they often pop out. The final straw... last night, when I pulled the connecting piece out of the car's lighter socket, that whole part of the assembly fell apart, it's various pieces scattered over the floor of the car, and I never got it back together.

Wagan Twin USB and 12V DC Cup Holder Power Adapter Review

Wagan Twin USB and 12V DC Cup Holder Power Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Wagan Twin USB/DC Cup Holder Adapter is a very good value. Considering that I paid the same price for a single USB car lighter adapter, this is a great value. It's conveniently shaped like a cup-holder, with the added benefits of 2 included DC adapters and 2 USB adapters. So far all 4 adapters work perfectly.
This adapter definitely sits lower in my cupholder than what I was expecting. It looks taller in the product picture, but expect it to be just above flush with your cup-holder. If your car has two different sized cupholders, one larger than the other, this unit is designed to fit in the smaller standard size. For me that is the cupholder further from the control panel and closer to my center arm-rest.
The unit has four LED indicator lights so you can judge how many devices can be charged with it. This "Battery Level Indicator" feature is a nice extra, with "HIGH," "MID," "12V" and "LOW" indicators.
The product package indicates this unit works with standard 12V and 24VDC accessories. Apparently there's a fuse inside the unit in the event you over-use it, though I haven't yet had the fuze go on me.
CONSIDERATIONS
There are a few shortcomings to the product, all of which I would consider minor. First of all, the lighter cable is relatively short. That's ok if you are plugging it into the DC outlet on your control panel. Many newer cars also have DC outlets within the arm-rest console storage area. I found that the cord was just barely long enough to reach down into my car's storage compartment and be plugged in. That means for some vehicles, like larger cars and SUVs, it might be too short. The deeper the storage compartment, the more likely you are to have trouble using that DC outlet to power this adapter.
The two DC adapters are very deep within the unit, almost too deep. For many DC powered car accessories with shorter plugs, it seems like it might be possible to push them in too far and lose electrical contact.
The other minor negative was that the USB adapters are not perfectly parallel. They are separated by metal but the USB pins are embedded in tabs made of some kind of composite material. You have to carefully insert USB cables because if you don't you risk damaging your connector or the adapter.
CONCLUSION
This is a good unit even if it isn't perfect. Considering the price and the fact that the product performs as advertised, I still recommend this over most others I have tried. It's worth it to have a few extra adapter plugs available to charge your accessories and electronics in your car.
Enjoy.
