Slacker G2 Personal Radio Player Dock Review

Slacker G2 Personal Radio Player Dock
Average Reviews:

The home dock has been a key missing accessories. Hopefully there will be a car dock as well. The home dock provides fix audio-out so this means that the volume must be controlled by the boombox, stereo or whatever you are using to listen. It also has a variable volume headphone jack, plus you can use almost any 5 volt USB cable with mini tip to power the dock. I am using a Motorola Razr AC power adapter and it works great. If you use the USB cable included with the G2 plug it into the dock and then into a computer it will allow you to charge the G2, but also you can add mp3's or you can refresh your station.
Now with the latest G2 firmware update, you have the ability to have the backlight come on when docked and powered. You can also have the G2 only come up when a song changes which as another cool feature.
You can also use the dock without power, though the backlight will not stay on, unless you set the G2 to have the backlight always on, but you can set it to turn on when a song changes. This allows you to use the dock and also make use of the G2's battery. Always charging it without every draining the battery is probably not a good idea for long term use.
The dock is well worth the $29.99.

I bought this item from Best Buy last week and after 3 days returned it. I took a chance in buying it since I could not find one single review online from any other buyers. Well, I took a risk & got burned. In my opinion, this item is NOT hands free. It does not 'automatically' reconnect with your phone every time you get in the car. This item worked fine the first day after I paired it, I was able to receive calls and hear pretty clearly (there was some mild hissing noise in the background). The problem is, every time I got back into the car on subsequent days, this item did not reconnect to my phone. I had to go into the options of my phone and direct my phone to reconnect with the Scosche, to me that is the "opposite" of hands free. I have used my phone with other Bluetooth devices and they were always connected (which is how it should be with Bluetooth, so I'm sure it was 'not' my phone, it was a problem with the Scosche). Also, you cannot place calls with the Scosche even if you have voice on your phone, I tried and it did not work. Listen, the only thing this gadget has going for it is that it goes thru the auxiliary input in the car, which is why I bought it, but that's it, so unless your prepared to manually connect it to your phone each time you turn your car on, forget about the Scosche!!!

Radio iPod Adaptor Connector For 2005-up Toyota Review

Radio iPod Adaptor Connector For 2005-up Toyota
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my YaTour device directly from the Chinese manufacturer, Qualir Corporation, intending to use it in my 2005 Toyota Matrix as a replacement for FM adapters. I took a calculated risk, finding no review of the YaTour but seeing a price well below my other option, the USA Spec PA15-TOY. And Qualir Corp provided free shipping from China. I went through a number of e-mail iterations to get Qualir Corp to ship the item in a timely manner. I highly recommend buying from a US distributor. Qualir Corp did reply consistently to e-mails, albeit with a one-day delay due to the time difference. The device installs very easily once you have instructions on taking out the Toyota 6-disc changer/radio (search online for a variety of available how-to videos - very straightforward). Don't count on the Qualir Corp instructions for the YaTour - the translation to English is almost impossibly poor. Alas, though, the product itself is very inexpensively manufactured. On my first usage, I had to wait for sufficient sunlight to straighten the pins in the iTouch adapter cord that attaches into the device. The pins are made of wire so fragile, and housed in a connector so cheaply made, that a number of the pins bent and made the connection impossible. It did get the pins straightened and the connection remade. Not a good start on customer satisfaction, though. Then the device routinely cuts out upon initial use of the Toyota volume control. Volume control works after restarting the iTouch. And the balance of the radio interface didn't seem to work well at all. The device is a major sound improvement over the FM adapter. Alas, though, the device died with only 12 hours play time! No reset, no cord fiddling, could get it back to life. Thankfully the iTouch and Toyota disc changer/radio survived unharmed. I contacted Qualir Corp for a refund or replacement, and was told to return the unit within 7 days and they'd pay for postage to China. Turns out the 7 days were from the receiving date. With the YaTour off to the trash, I now have the more expensive USA Spec PA15-TOY, and thus far it works very well. The price, smaller size, and the simple aux. input are the only advantages I found with the YaTour, assuming one gets a device that works, and that one can figure out the interface controls or live within the limits of the YaTour. My calculated risk cost me $55 and half a trip without a usable interface.

For select 2004-2006 Toyota factory radios with controls for an optional CD changer or satellite radio, this cable provides a direct audio input from any iPod with a dock connector, and it also charges the iPod while connected. By using the dock connector for audio output, the highest musical sound quality is achieved- much better than any FM transmitter or headphone adapter can provide. The iPod's click wheel controls are still used for song selection, play control, etc. Note: This part is NOT compatible with vehicles featuring factory equipped external CD changers, satellite radio turner, navigation, or video systems. Not compatible with 2006 Toyota 6-disc in-dash radios. Rio Carbon 5 GB MP3 Player Review

Rio Carbon 5 GB MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
General thoughts about Music Playback:
It's great at its main purpose, playing music. The Rio Carbon is small and incredibly lightweight so carrying it in your jean pocket, jacket pocket, tight jeans' pocket, etc... is easy and comfortable. The metal back scratches a little too easily but that is something you have to expect with this kind of shiny surface. Just love the battery life for playing music (not recording! - see below). The way the music files are organized requires me to really use playlists. Otherwise, I'll often play the same album 20 times in a row. Shuffle could be a little bit more random but really can't complain. I mainly bought this device because of its potential for super multi-tasking so I'll leave the music playback comments to other reviewers.
As a Portable Hard Drive:
I've used it to replace my USB memory drives (since I either lose them or they stop working after 6 months) and it interfaces seamlessly with the computers I use (mainly Win XP). Like all multi-GB HDDs, it takes awhile to scan the files when you first plug it in. Unfortunately, you can't download the Win 98 drivers from the Rio website. For those who use Win 98 computers occasionally, this means that you'll either need to carry the Rio CD around with you or put the drivers online (i.e. in an email account). Overall, the concept of using this as a cheap portable small harddrive that just happens to be an mp3 player is very appealing to a student like me. You get slightly less than 5Gb so it's possible to allot one entire gigabyte to files while saving the other 3.7GB to music. It's about the size of 3 Sandisk Cruzer Mini USB drives laid parallel to each other, but it can hold a billion more files (slight exaggeration)!
As an Audible player:
Unlike the review below, I've had very little to no problems listening to Audible tracks on the player. I've used an old iPod and a Treo 600 with the Audible Manager software before so I know that juggling extra Audible devices is confusing but definitely possible. I've heard that Rio Carbon only accepts Audible formats 2 and 3. Audible always requires that you download drivers for (or "Activate") any new device/player you add onto your account. My experience is that downloading a 46MB Audible format 3 file takes me about 10-15 minutes. Copying onto the Carbon takes me 5 minutes via USB 2.0. Maybe this varies with Carbons and/or software but personally, I really appreciate the ease and integration between Audible and Rio Carbon. (My old 2nd gen iPod had problems but that was probably because I got it secondhand and the previous user was also an Audible user. Songs can be transferred but couldn't be played.)
As a voice recorder:
I had such high ambitions for this device to be used to record lectures. Sigh... the whirring of the hard drive, the orientation of the built-in mic (perpendicular from the face of the Carbon)... all this really hinders any kind of comprehensible recordings you have when you sit more than 4 rows away from the front of the class. No wonder Rio specified the voice recordings for reminders and such. I was able to listen to the muffled and noisy recordings by fiddling with the equalizer in windows media player 9 (without needing to find a noise reduction software) so maybe it's still possible to use this as a lecture recorder. Turning down 32 - 125 Hz on the Graphic Equalizer in WMP9 pretty much cuts out the whirring hard drive noise. Recording format is .wav and a 1 hour lecture is 12.2Mb at 32kbps. The Carbon heats up slightly during recording. Also, recording eats up batteries. The battery barely made it while recording for 2.5 hours (plus about 30 minutes of listening to music). If you have a laptop, you can easily charge it inbetween classes really quickly.

Average Reviews:

My new car came with s Sirius radio. I liked it so much I wanted the same programming at home. I'm in Maine and was not sure I could get consistent reception.
Installation was without muss or fuss. It took all of ten minutes to hook up the receiver to my sound system and find a spot for the antenna on my deck where reception was good. The built-in signal strength indicator helped a lot. The system has worked dependably since. I did pull in the antenna during a major snowstorm so I'm not sure it works when buried in snow.
The remote is small so you have to be careful not to lose it. Apart from that, no negatives.

TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

I have tried a Garmin 680 and a Tom Tom Go 720. You can argue back/forth about the gps abilities of the two brands, but there is one BIG negative that the Garmin has vs. Tom Tom. The Garmin navigation screen is pretty, but information poor. No distance to objective. No speed. No miles travelled. No street names as you pass them. And no option to see any of that except by slecting a different screen. Tom Tom lets you see all of that on the navigation screen. If you never had it, you may not miss it. Once you have had it, if you buy a Garmin, you will regret doing it.

Harman Kardon GPS-810 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

Harman Kardon GPS-810 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this unit but returned it because, for me, the cons (most significantly the battery life) outweighed the pros. Here is a rundown of what I found:
Pros:
- solid build - you can feel the quality when you hold this device
- generally good performance, rapid satellite lock and route calculation
- excellent car mounting accessories
- beautiful large screen with video playback as well as audio
- control knob is innovative and convenient
- menus are intuitive and easy to follow
Cons:
- 2 hour battery life (confirmed to be "normal" by HK tech) - this is fine if you don't plan to use video feature and instead intend to leave it mounted in the same vehicle all the time
- suspend feature described in quick start guide missing on some units pending firmwire update expected in the next couple of months - so the unit reboots completely every time you turn it off
- recalculation routing sometimes erratic (lots of U-turns!)
- full user manual not available and no time-frame within which it will be released - a complex, feature-rich device such as this deserves better
Bottom line: a good product, but needs some refining before it can justify the price tag.
